The 2016 GSU Scottish Championship was hosted by Ray Wilson & his club Kettlebells Aberdeen. Below is a  brief write-up of the event taken from Ray’s own report of the day and full results can be found after the text. Over to Ray:

Whoa, whatta weekend!
We were delighted to host one of the big 4 GSU events in what was a great day of kettlebell sport.

a60600_1c0dfac34443426fb545e4a456865932-mv2_d_1361_2048_s_2a60600_365633433cbb486cadda6fa4029414d9-mv2_d_1361_2048_s_2We had local, national and international competitors take to the platform in the Biathlon and Long Cycle Events, and they included record holders such as Abi Johnston from Scotland, Eddie Sheehan from Ireland and Kimberley Fox from America.

These guys did not disappoint on the day, putting on amazing performances – Abi with 20kg Biathlon (double Jerk), Eddie putting up huge numbers with the 32kg bells and Kimberley handling double 24kg in the ladies Long Cycle. Danish veteran athletes Inge and Dorothe were also inspiring, both lifting 20kg Double Long Cycle.

I am always inspired by this sports ability to offer so much. Winslie, 63, committed just about 3 months training for this and what would be his first competitive event – ever. Winslie was excited at the opportunity to test himself at a competition that was on his doorstep. While his lifts were not strictly in the GSU list of available events, the GSU and I were inspired by his enthusiasm and development that it was a no brainer to get Winslie up there on the platform in front of a supportive and growing crowd.

This reflects so nicely what kettlebell training can offer us – the development of a past time  and hobby into more dedicated lifting, into testing yourself, improving your fitness and striving to achieve better results. Brilliant.

I have to give a big thanks to everyone involved with the organisation and preparation of the day. The GSU provided preparation advice, the bells and timers (Mark, Abi and Angelina). The guys at Wolverson Fitness provided the winners prizes and the KBA team on the day provided loads of support – Lou, John, Phil, Karen, Sian and Caz & Connor.

The Hilton Convention Centre itself was very supportive and accommodating and I received great complements for the venue itself.

Also thanks to the raffle contributors – Walkers, Food for Fitness, Rustico Restaurant, Glen Garioch, Wolverson Fitness, The Fire Training Group and the GSU. Their prizes made for happy raffle winners and resulted in support of the KBA team.

So thats that for another wee while. I was so excited to deliver another kettlebell competition in Aberdeen again and with big support and visitors to the event, it shows that our sport continues growing from strength to strength. I look forward to doing it again!

Eddie Sheehan, Kilkenny Kettlebell Club Coach is the Irish Representative for the hosting of  Stage 1 and 2 of the Ultimate Girevik Cup in Ireland.

The IGSJA Ultimate Girevik Cup is an international kettlebell half marathon league championship that will be held over 3 stages throughout the year 2014. By competing over 3 stages, an athlete has the chance to develop his/her skills and strength during a whole year instead of just taking one shot at one competition. On the IGSJA site you will be able to keep track of the results of all participating athletes.

Each athlete has 30 min to perform as many repetitions as possible without setting his/ her kettlebell down. The athlete may change hands at will. The athlete can choose to compete in any of the 3 disciplines: Jerk, Snatch or Long Cycle.

Athletes must maintain proper form and fixation.

Weight Categories
Athletes are divided in 2 weight classes: Women -55, +55kg Men -75, +75kg.  However, if there are less than 4 athletes in one weight class in an event, athletes will compete as one unique weight class regardless of their actual weight.

Athletes compete against others according to each kettlebell size category and discipline. Athletes must compete in the same discipline, using the same kettlebell size for all 3 stages.

Kettlebell Weight Categories

  • Women: 12kg, 16kg (24kg, see below)
  • Men: 24kg, 32kg
  • Athletes with MS level must compete with the heaviest kettlebell category.
  • If we can get at least 4 women to lift Long Cycle with 24kg, then we’ll make a division for them. Other option, they may lift in the men’s category under 75kg. Please email thierry@kettlebellsport.dk  for more info.
Timing of the Events in Ireland
  • Stage One will take place on 19th April at CrossFit Kilkenny, Cillin Hill, Kilkenny.
  • Stage 2 will take place in July/August -date to be confirmed.
  • Stage 3 will be the final event of the league championship, and will take place in Sønderborg, Denmark on 6-7/12/2014. The final event is organized in collaboration with KettlebellSportDanmark.

Apart from attending an official “live” stage, athletes may also have a chance to improve their results during stage 1 and 2 only, by sending a virtual entry in the time frame for each stage. To be considered for the Ultimate Girevik Cup. All athletes must attend and lift at the final, where the Cup winners will be revealed and rewarded. However Prizes will be given at the end of Stage 2 for the “Best Irish Entries” in each category.
