20785940_675410489316492_9131090858767573091_oThanks to everyone who made the 2017 Scottish Championship a success! So many people came together to help and make sure it went to plan – from all of the team at Barbreck Studio to the extended kettlebell family offering help with scoring, providing bells, setting up, judging. Practically everyone there helped in some way!

Thanks also to the sponsors, including Wolverson Fitness and Arnold Clark.

Great day all round! Scores are now live on the Girevoy Sports Union website, and will also be prepared and submitted for the WAKSC – World Association of Kettlebell Sport Clubs Grand Prix League later this week.

Sunday 6th Dec saw the very first IKFF UK Pentathlon, also held in association with GSU. Congratulations to all the lifters and event organisers, what a great day!

Garioch Kettlebells hosted a brilliant day of kettlebell lifting in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. Seasoned UK Pentathlon athlete and IKFF Master Trainer Alan Lyon headed up the GKB team to deliver the sold out full day comp to lifters from all over the UK.

Pentathlon was originally introduced by the WKC in America and involves contesting 5 lifts, each lasting 6 mins each with a 5 min rest between. The lifts are all done with a single bell and the lifter can switch as many times as possible. The lifts, in order, are:

  • Cleans (max reps 120)ikff5
  • Longcycle press (max reps 60)
  • Jerk (max reps 120)
  • Half snatch (max reps 108)
  • Push press (max reps 120)

The fixometer, a type of motion sensor device attached to the kettlebell, are sometimes used, as in this case, in pentathlon competitions to signal to lifters and judges that reps have been fixated as appropriate.

In this particular event there were 3 weight categories each for men and women, with bronze silver and gold medals in each category. Overall winners were awarded and also Achievement Awards were presented. Special congratulations go to to Alan Lyon and Alaine Ross for achieving overall winners trophies, Alaine  also achieved the highest recorded result in a pentathlon competition using the fixometer with a score of 1216.75!

Well done to all, it was a brilliant event, and the first of more to come. As dates are confirmed for future UK events we’ll add them to the event calendar.

The Welsh Open was first competition of the year and got things off to a great start! Nearly 70 entrants with many stepping up in kettlebell weight and/or trying new events, as well as a number of people new to the sport taking to the platform for their first time!

The Boat Shed in Cardiff were organised, efficient and hospitable hosts as always, hopefully be back next year! Congratulations go to all lifters on their sets, beginner or experienced lifter stepping on the platform is always an achievement! Thanks also too to everyone else, members and non-members, who helped on the day be it with judging, calculating scores & medals, moving and sorting equipment and kettlebells or even impromptu IT & technical support! And thank you too to our main sponsors Wolverson Fitness for their support!

New Masters of Sport:

A special congratulations to Anna Plumridge of Box Bell Fit Training and to Will Dollar of Brighton Girevoy Sport Club who were awarded their Master of Sports certificates from sets they did at the GSU British Championships and IUKL World Championships respectively. Both Will and Anna achieved their MS ranking in Long cycle last year, notably Reece Armstrong also achieved Master of Sport rank (Biathlon) at the IUKL World Championships and his certificate is waiting for him too! The website will be updated shortly with their rankings and also the remainder of the rankings from last year’s competitions.

Next Event:

Next event coming up is the English Open Championships in Newquay on the 11th April. All welcome, members and non-members alike. Registration will be opened this week. The hosts say you can just about see the sea from the competition venue, Cornwall in Spring should be very beautiful so what can be better than a holiday and competition rolled into one!
